The Design Process

All of Blackbird Design Studio's stained glass jewelry creations are handcrafted using the traditional method of stained glass craftsmanship.

Each piece is cut by hand, either using a self-created pattern or freehand, then the edges are smoothed using a grinder. Copper foil is wrapped around the edges and burnished (pressing down and make the foil smooth), giving the piece a “frame”. The copper is then coated with lead-free solder, making the “frame" silvertone.

Next is what I consider the most fun! Copper wire that has a coating of solder is twisted, coiled and turned to compliment the cut and colors of each creation. I sometimes add beads for accent when we feel they enhance the design, either on the wire or suspended off the piece.

As with any handcrafted item, every piece is unique and different unto itself.

Even though all my pieces will last for many years of day-to-day wear, please treat them as you would any fine jewelry. Please keep in the gift box it came in or in your jewelry box. When needed, gently wipe it clean with any cloth, being careful not to pull on the wire or foil.

The pieces can get wet, but there is no need to soak in water. With proper care, Blackbird Studio Designs will last for many, many years of enjoyment.
